Between thunderstorms and illness, I've been
gone from here for nearly a month. Hopefully,
I can stick around for awhile. We've dodged the
severe weather at my location, but so many areas
haven't been as lucky, with a 3 day total of over
150 tornado and high wind reports each, and over
275 reports of large hail. Tomorrow and possibly
Wednesday look to be the only quiet weather days
for awhile...and my lawn guy will finally get to
mow the yard, as it needs it bad... as well as 3
sets of downed tree branches removed. There is a
severe storm to my northwest with large hail, but
I should be able to finish this net before it gets
here...but, The Pun In Life Net may get scuttled
again, though (sigh!). I was delayed releasing a
square dance publication that I do each month, but
I finally got it out this morning. Now, I get a
break from that for 2 weeks.
A trip to the ER last week with intense chest pain
turned out to be severely strained chest muscles
from a bad coughing fit...the pollen has been very
bad this year. All the cardiac enzymes and blood
work were within normal limits. But, with having
congestive heart failure already, I didn't want to
take a chance. I have 4 sets of doctors to see in
May...my podiatrist (I see them every 9 weeks), my
PCP, my eye doctor, and cardiologist (he's not the
one with the "get well cards" (hi hi)). In July,
it's the PCP and urologist (with a female nurse
practitioner), then the PCP for a full physical in
September. I guess I'm really taking "a turn for
the nurse" (hi hi). My PCP is female, and they tend
to be gentler than their male counterparts,
especially in "certain sensitive areas" (hi hi).
There is a D-Star Net on Monday through Friday
mornings, called the Digital Radio Enthusiasts Net,
or DRE for short...but for us males, that means
something totally different (hi hi).
Except for the medical runs, I've basically been home
24/7. It's apparently too much out of everyone's way
to offer me a ride. At least the faculty advisor for
the local college ham radio club gives me a ride. He's
a fellow VE, but he has the keys to the exam room!! I'm
doing a license exam session Saturday, the last one my
group does before the Extra Class Pool and Exams change
on July 1. The new pool is smaller, but more difficult.
I'll bet we'll have folks show up who studied the wrong
pool...it happens every time that occurs. We like to talk
to the new and upgrading hams about ham radio porn...the
price of rigs and related gear. If the catalog says either
CALL or WEB, it's too expensive to purchase (hi hi).
Speaking of which, I hated to see MFJ basically "shutting
down" as of May 17. They're going to sell what stock they
have, so if you want a good deal, now's the time to shop.
Over the years, I had bought some clocks, a TNC, and an amp
from them. I doubt anyone is going to fill the void that
they'll leave. Grady, W4GLE, in Alabama, is an MFJ dealer,
and he can get you a good deal, if you are interested.
I get my groceries and medications delivered; otherwise,
I rarely get company or even phone calls. Last Saturday
marked 17 years since my XYL passed away. I was sobbing
as I posted a tribute to her on Facebook. Those of you
who've lost spouses or loved ones, know what I'm talking
about.
I'm frustrated that so many hams have bad emails on QRZ.
If their ARRL membership expires, their callsign@arrl.net
address does so as well. Or, their ISP no longer exists,
or they closed accounts, and didn't bother to change it.
To Charley, NT5R, your email is bad on QRZ. I tried to
email you that the 4 States Amateur Radio Club is doing
a tailgate party and Swapfest in New Boston, Texas next
Saturday, May 11. Contact Greg, KI5NHZ, for more info.
I will say that my email is good on QRZ...at least as
long as GMail doesn't crash, as that's where that QRZ
email address goes to.
The home health care nurse suggested I go into assisted
living, but my main issue right now is getting viable
transportation. I can get around the house easily enough,
although I might run out of food before the next payment
on disability comes in...which won't be good, as I require
food with most of my medications. I ran out of cough drops,
and with the bad spring pollen season, I've been hacking
like a 20 pack a day smoker. I hope I can get some relief
soon.
Slim Chickens did me dirty on a delivery order last week.
They charged me for Texas Toast that I never got (2 with
the meal, and 4 extras). They didn't seem to be interested
in granted a refund, so I left them a nasty email, and I'm
removing the app from my smartphone. They were out of the
item, but the app never picked up on it. I won't ever be
ordering from them again. At least with Grubhub orders, if
I get shorted, I can get a refund on the order.
My BBS turns 32 on Wednesday, but I haven't done much with
it lately, due to vision issues. I would like to get back
with it, but it's hard being at the computer for ham radio
nets or otherwise, for long periods of time anymore.

Speaking of yard work, I'm getting ready for my 3rd mowing
already. A bit early in the season for us to be that far
along.
Yesterday, spent the day down at the track flagging for the
Mass Tuning group. They're an organization that rents track
time from us and then allows people to bring the family
racecar, (Corvettes, Mustangs, Porsches, what have you) for
races. They're not real competitive, but it's fun for the
drivers.
A while back I mentioned I had built an M17 node using a
raspberry pi and mvoice software. It's not much more than a
digital echolink. But it works good. Thinking I want to do
an M17 mod to a TYT-MD380 so I can go RF. We'll see...
Carl - film is becoming "hip" again - it's good to be old
school!

Hello Daryl and the net! Week was pretty good... however I
didn't get a mowing in before the rains hit. And now, I have
to wait until the yard is not "soup" to get the mowing in
that is desperately needed.
Radio news. Local Club has received one of two new Yaesu
repeaters, so than we can get our repeater upgrades in, and
move into the 1990s LOL j/k.
Lightning has dampened the "playing radio" recently, so
trying to make up for things while we have a break in the
storm train!
BTW, not sure if it is still underway, but Yaesu was promoting
their repeaters with a program where they were basically 50%
discounted. So if anyone was looking for new gear, it may be
worth the look.

Well, not a whole lot of radio news from here. We do have a
new packet node up. Another local packeteer has set up a link
for the local Salvation Army. I helped him with checkout. It
is nice to see anything new on the packet front.
I got the pictures back from my Disney trip a couple of weeks
ago. I am old school (sometimes) and took a film camera, so I
had to get them developed and scanned. This last weekend, I
spent some time organizing and choosing some to post. If anyone

This last weekend, I also did a little day trip to the Vero
Beach Museum of Art. They had an Egyptian art exhibit I wanted
to see, and I suddenly realized that this was the last week,
so I had to head down there. It's about an hour south of me.
While I was there I also stopped at McKee Gardens ... a nice
botanical garden that specializes in water lilies. This is a
good time to go, the lilies are in bloom. So, that made for
a fun day trip.

The back is starting to feel better, the doc gave me some good
anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants, so I can sleep easier.
The knee is doing OK, the back pain has been diverting away
from the knee pain...
I haven't been doing much in the shack lately, because the shack
chair isn't very comfortable, but I have been playing on the
radio for short spells with the new Teensy RP TNC. Not a lot of
stations heard, but trying anyway.
Arlene and I will be going to the west coast at the beginning of
the month for a couple of weeks, visiting with family and friends
there, so I won't be participating on the NETS for the duration.
Good to see you back in action Daryl, and thanks to Bob for
providing the facilities

It has been a good week. The last month and a half was one train
wreck after another. I think things have settled down for awhile
at least.
I have some antenna maintenance I need to do in the next few weeks.
I managed to dodge this weekends severe weather.
Jackie received a treatment for the Malformed veins causing her
headaches and that seems to be helping.

are back in the "packet saddle" again!
We had severe wx Saturday night. There was a cell reported about
1 1/2 miles from the qth, but we had no damage. There was a roof
blown off a small hangar at an airport about 2 miles from us.
Nothing here at all like happened in Sulphur, OK.
My 6yo grandson and I just completed a Nintendo Switch Labo Kit,
which is a cardboard "robot" made from cardboard. It took us
several evenings to complete, but when he has it on (with the
two switch controllers inserted in it) and the game running on
the TV, his movements are reflected by an avatar on the screen.
He loves it and I must admint, it's pretty cool!
Forgot to mention I'm glad all the health reports tonight seem
to be in a positive direction!

off right after the net had ended...so the preparation of the
scribe had to wait until this morning.
Bob (NY), I missed doing the net...thanks for covering for me.
On the lawn, it's a race between the grass and weeds on what's
growing faster (hi hi). And, speaking of racing, FB on the cars
at the track. GL on the M17 setup, and your comment on film made
me think of the blonde needing film for her digital camera (hi hi).
Scott (WAV), agreed on the "lawn soup". I am in no shape to do the
lawn myself, but weather and my health has delayed him...although
he's due here this morning (April 30). FB on the Yaesu repeaters...
get the discount wherever you can.
Carl, FB on the new packet setup, the Disney pictures, plus the
art exhibit, and the trip to McKee Gardens for the water lilies.
Rick, glad you're feeling a little better, but a comfy chair is a
must in the ham shack. Enjoy the vacation...I'll give you a
courtesy check while you're gone. And FB on the TNC. Our next net
holiday is May 27 for Memorial Day.
Scott (JRV), glad you missed the stormy weather, and FB on the
medicine for Miss Jackie. Hope you can get the antenna work done.
Bob (OK), I saw a deal on the Ryan Hall Ya'll YouTube channel, on
the 3 days of severe weather...over 150 tornado reports, over 150
damaging wind reports, over 275 large hail reports...plus widespread
damage, injuries, and fatalities. May is the peak of the spring
tornado season, averaging 5 tornadoes a month. We hope the weather
reports will start being positive, as was the health reports were
tonight.
FB on that cardboard robot that you and your grandson built...glad
you both are enjoying it.
