Hi All,
Just thought I'd share some info for anyone using windows newsreading
applications to access the packet BBS network gated to NNTP.

This is connected with a few tests you may have seen recently so thanks,
especially to Andy 'HUD',for your kind co-operation in ignoring them :-)

For several years I've been using Outlook Express 5.0 on an old P166MMX
with Win98 for packet and email which has proved very satisfactory for
reading bulletins and normal SP/email using seperate accounts for
internet/amprnet. It has one limitation using the newsreader section of
OE5, when replying to bulletins from the normal AX25 network that I've not
been able to find an answer for in OE5.
When bulletins are gated to the amprnet they are sorted into various news
groups with inevitably new or short lived TOPICS e.g BINGE@GBR being sorted
into ampr.misc. This field is carried to the NNTP in the 'X-BBS-To:' header
but with OE5 I could not find a way of preserving this header when I reply,
as these headers are stripped out and I could not find an option to write
my own headers so I began a search for other FREE newsreaders as I AM a
radio amateur and don't like to pay for ANY software on principle
(my guilt threshold is quite high) :-)

After trying several I have settled on 'Dialogue' from 40tude as being most
suitable for my use which is available from

http://40tude.com/dialog/

It seems to have all the features that I'm looking for in an on/offline
newsreader (I'm using it via a shared 19K2 baud simplex link on 70cm)
so I normally just download the new headers when I come on, then either
'mark' bulletins to download in a batch or double click them to download
the bulletin text 'live'.
It has the ability to set up various X-BBS- headers manually so I can
simply type BINGE@GBR and that will be gated back to the correct 'To' and
distribution fields so it has the flexibility for AX25 postings so I'm
going to stick with it for a while but so far its working well and for
anyone used to using Outlook Express its very easy to configure and use.
