Weekly Wrap-Up

It's been a busy week for activations, with numerous operators hitting the airwaves.

Stuart, VK7FADZ, set out for the summit of Mt Marian, located in Tasmania's scenic Wellington Range. Once at the top, he set up his portable station and successfully made 19 QSOs across the 40m and 15m bands. His activation reached stations not only across VK and ZL, but also as far afield as France. Itâ€Ös always great to work some Dx while activating.

Angela, VK7AMP, and Tony, VK7LTD, were kept busy with several activations. They began at the Calverts Lagoon Conservation Area in South Arm before heading north to the Lake Dulverton Conservation Area in Oatlands. Known for its distinctive cow sculptures in the water, Lake Dulverton was formerly called Lake Frederick in the early 1800s. From there, they continued further north to the Tom Gibson Nature Reserve in Epping Forestâ€öone of only fifteen locations in Australia recognised as a National Biodiversity Hotspot.

Peter, VK7ZPE, and Rodney, VK7HAM, ventured north to the picturesque Low Head Conservation Area, situated near the mouth of the Tamar River in northern Tasmania. They made a solid number of QSOs, engaging with operators across VK.

Ian, VK7IAN, activated the Murphys Flat Conservation Area, located near Granton and New Norfolk. This conservation area is part of a wetland complex along the southern shore of the River Derwent. During the activation, Ian operated on the 40, 20, 15, and 10 meter bands.

Jim, VK7JZ, had a busy week activating parks in VK3, successfully activating five park references. His efforts resulted in 160 QSOs, and he was the first to activate four of the five references. The references included Lakes Entrance Beach, Lake Bunga Beach, Shelly Beach, Lake Tyers Beach, and Colquhoun Regional Park. Jim operated using both SSB and CW.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH WEST
North West Tasmania Amateur Radio Club
VK7RAL Clubs repeaters, RF link is off air

The repeater committee, recently became aware the new RF link radio installed in July 2024 on VK7RAL, to link it to VK7RAA in the north has failed. A visit to the site location last week, confirmed the link radio isnâ€Öt operating.

This link allows amateurs on the West Coast via VK7RWC Mt Read and VK7RAL Companion hill to converse with amateurs in the NW & NTH, via VK7RAA in Launceston and VK7RAC 70cm Table Cape.

The original link radio was built by SK VK7JG Joe OAM, over 20 years ago, but had issues, believed related to a lighting strike, so it was removed. The repeater committee will work to get this issue rectified, so the West Coasters can again talk to other amateurs.

Those who can access VK7RAL via radio, can still operate on it, and itâ€Ös permanently connected to 7RWC on the West Coast. and vice versa.
NWTARC Bi-Monthly Meeting

This week was very light on as far as news was concerned, but we do have one special event on the horizon. Please mark Wednesday night the 11th June on your calendars.

Trevor VK7TB and Eric will be enlightening us with a presentation on the challenges of radio restoration.

This restoration centres on the British Marconi R1155 communications receiver which was commonly used with its associated T1154 transmitter unit. The R1155 was extensively used by the Royal Air Force during World War II, mainly in larger aircraft such as the Lancaster Bomber. From the pre-restoration pictures, one should probably call it the restoration from hell! Not just a replace all capacitors and send it on its way refurbish, but a total strip down back to chassis level. Their endeavours even involved learning the art of vacuum forming plastic covers and re-manufacturing front panels. This journey appears to have been a very dedicated undertaking by Trevor and Eric. Hope to see you there for this “interesting on so many levels” presentation.

UPCOMING EVENTS

TestNet and TechNet session - Every Wednesday, TestNet/CW course on 3.580 MHz from 7 pm, then a TechNet on 3.567 MHz from 7.30 pm till 8.30 pm. Your host for the evening is Nic VK7WW.

Club Room Technical night session - The next session will be this Wednesday the 28th May, at the usual time of 6.30 pm at the Club Room Archer Street, Rocherlea.

Technical night presentation - By Trevor VK7TB and Eric on restoration of an R1155 communications receiver. Wednesday night the 11th June at the Archer Street Club Rooms, Rocherlea.

Coffee Morning - held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Time is from 10 am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all there. So why not pop in check the QSL cards and join us for a cuppa, there is endless tea and coffee along with biscuits available for a donation.

Finally - A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email them to the Secretary at the following address news(at)ntarc.net all items to be received no later than 5 pm on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.

Thatâ€Ös all folks,

Last Wednesday night was the first fully high definition broadcast (stream) from the revised DATV studio.

We featured the following segments starting with Ron VK7WRC and his 3D Print Radio Mount for the car. This mount is in the foot well on the drivers side and uses the existing centre console mounting screw points and does not need any additional holes. Thanks Ron.

We then showed an early Telegraph relay and mock-up sounder that Justin VK7TW is working on.

We moved to the latest release from the Royal Australian Mint one dollar coin to celebrate 100 years of the Royal Australian Corps of Signals.

We showed Fred Swainston's new book on Applied Mathematics for amateur radio which is aligned to what is needed for Advanced HAREC/CEPT International Syllabus.

Justin then show some pictures of his trip underground at the Central Deborah mine at Bendigo during the WIA AGM.

We highlighted the recent ITU Report Working Group 5A

Report that includes references to Tassie Ham-E-Con and finished with future events.

Next Wednesday night will be a WEGs night back in the studio and on a Wednesday night people start arriving at the night around 6pm and many bring their dinner to enjoy.

Gyroscope-on-a-Chip Targets GPSâ€Ös Dominance - Centimeter-scale wayfinding accuracy emerges from millimeter-scale tech

Researchers have long sought to miniaturize optical gyroscopes to enhance navigation systems, especially in environments where GPS signals are unreliable or compromised. Traditional optical gyroscopes, like ring-laser and fiber-optic types, have been effective but are often bulky and power-intensive. Recent advancements have led to the development of chip-scale optical gyroscopes, which promise to deliver comparable performance in a much smaller form factor.

A significant breakthrough came from Caltech's Professor Ali Hajimiri and his team, who, in 2018, demonstrated a solid-state gyroscope small enough to fit on a grain of rice. This device utilizes the Sagnac effect, where light beams traveling in opposite directions around a loop experience a phase shift when the loop rotates, allowing for precise rotation measurements. By effectively managing noise and signal loss, the team achieved sensitivity levels comparable to larger fiber-optic gyroscopes.

Building on this foundation, companies like Anello Photonics and One Silicon Chip Photonics (OSCP) have introduced commercial gyroscope-on-a-chip systems. These devices offer precise heading and distance tracking without relying on satellite signals, making them particularly valuable in scenarios where GPS is susceptible to jamming or spoofing, such as in military operations or autonomous vehicles.

The chip-based gyroscopes not only provide resilience against GPS vulnerabilities but also offer advantages in terms of size, weight, and power consumption. Their compact nature allows for integration into a variety of platforms, from drones to handheld devices, expanding the possibilities for navigation and orientation in challenging environments.

As the technology matures, these miniature optical gyroscopes are poised to revolutionize navigation systems, providing reliable and accurate positioning information where traditional GPS systems fall short. The continued development and commercialization of these devices signify a significant step forward in the field of inertial navigation.

Historical Engineers: John Logie Baird, Inventor of the First Color TV

John Logie Baird, born in 1888 in Scotland, was an electrical engineer who played a significant role in developing television. His experiments were a mix of successes, failures, and creative improvisations. Despite setbacks, Bairdâ€Ös persistence led to the first public demonstration of television and set the groundwork for many future technologies.

Baird's early television systems employed mechanical scanning techniques, utilizing spinning discs with lenses to capture and display images. This approach, while rudimentary, was groundbreaking at the time and laid the foundation for future advancements in television technology. His work demonstrated the feasibility of transmitting moving images, a concept that was revolutionary in the 1920s.

In addition to black-and-white television, Baird was a pioneer in color broadcasting. On July 3, 1928, he demonstrated the world's first color television transmission using a mechanical system with color filters. This innovation showcased his forward-thinking approach and commitment to enhancing the viewer's experience. His experiments with color laid the groundwork for future developments in color television technology.

Baird's contributions to television were not limited to technical innovations; he also played a role in popularizing the medium. His public demonstrations and collaborations with retailers helped bring television into the public consciousness. Despite the limitations of his mechanical systems, Baird's vision and determination were instrumental in transforming television from a scientific curiosity into a viable form of mass communication.
